52% of UK Youth Favor Strong Leader Over Democracy

Channel 4’s research into Gen-Z news consumption habits reveals a concerning trend: 52% of UK youth aged 13 to 27 believe the country would benefit from a strong leader, unfettered by Parliament and elections. This contrasts with 40% of those aged 45 to 65. The study also highlights a gender divide, with 45% of young men feeling that promoting women’s equality has led to discrimination against men. Channel 4 boss Alex Mahon warns of a potential slide into an “American news swamp,” where news is often driven by popularity rather than factuality. Despite this, Mahon believes the UK’s regulatory environment is better equipped to address these issues. She suggests solutions like introducing trustmarks, extending regulation for public service news on social media, and training AI to identify credible news sources.
