500 Years of Data: MIT-Linked Nobel Winners Prove Economic Growth and Innovation Thrive in Democracies

Four individuals with MIT connections have won Nobel Prizes in 2024. Professors Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson, along with political scientist James Robinson, received the economics prize for demonstrating that inclusive governments foster greater economic activity than extractive systems. Their research, spanning 500 years, shows that democracies, by protecting property rights, encourage technological innovation. Acemoglu has been at MIT since 1993, and Johnson served as the IMF’s chief economist from 2007 to 2008. In medicine, Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were awarded for discovering microRNA, crucial for gene regulation. Their work, initially at MIT, identified over 1,000 microRNA genes in humans, impacting cell differentiation.
