In the past two decades, Saudi Arabia has undergone significant social and economic shifts. Twenty years ago, the city of Buraidah exemplified the country’s challenges, with religious police enforcing strict rules such as shop closures during the five daily prayers and restrictions on women’s movement. At that time, there were no cinemas or concerts, and most restaurants served only men. Economic pressures were also evident, as two decades of relatively low oil prices questioned the sustainability of well-paid government jobs for Saudis. This dissatisfaction contributed to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, culminating in a 2005 incident where a local militant cell engaged in a nearly 48-hour battle with security forces. These statistics highlight the profound changes and challenges faced by Saudi Arabia over the last twenty years.
