Udio, an AI music company, uses diffusion models to generate songs from random noise, guided by text prompts. These models rely on extensive training data, which includes millions of existing songs, to produce new music. The quality of the training data, the model’s architecture, and the specificity of the prompts all influence the output’s quality. Udio and its competitor Suno, with over 12 million users, are at the forefront of this technology. Suno raised $125 million in May 2024, while Udio secured $10 million in April 2024. Both companies face ongoing lawsuits from major record labels, filed in June 2024, over alleged copyright infringement in their training data.
