39.3 Minutes Per Game: The Statistic Behind Kyrie Irving’s Injury

Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks’ star guard, suffered a season-ending ACL tear during a game against the Sacramento Kings. Before the injury, Irving had been averaging 39.3 minutes per game, the highest in the NBA over the previous 10 games. This increase in playing time came after the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Coach Jason Kidd dismissed any suggestions that Irving’s injury was linked to his increased minutes, calling it a “freak accident.” Irving, who had been the team’s most consistent player, was averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 36.1 minutes per game. He had played in 50 of the team’s 62 games and was selected to his ninth All-Star team. The Mavericks faced challenges with only eight healthy players available in their next game against the Milwaukee Bucks, which they lost 137-107.
