In 2022, distracted driving claimed 3,308 lives in the US, with texting being the most alarming distraction. A recent trial in New Jersey highlighted a particularly tragic incident. On July 17, 2023, 6-year-old Fajr Williams, who had disabilities and used a wheelchair, died on a school bus. The bus monitor, Amanda Davila, 28, was supposed to ensure the safety of children like Williams. However, Williams’ wheelchair was not properly secured, leading to her sliding down and being strangled by her own harness. During this time, Davila was distracted, texting 34 times and checking Instagram. This case underscores the dangers of distraction, not just while driving, but also in other critical roles. Thirty US states now have laws banning the use of mobile devices while driving, aiming to reduce such preventable tragedies.
