67 Lives Lost in Midair Collision: Investigators Scrutinize Altitude and Staffing

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating a tragic midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and a Black Hawk military helicopter over the Potomac River, resulting in the death of all 67 people on board. The incident, which occurred near Washington, D.C.’s Reagan National Airport, is the deadliest U.S. air crash since 2001. Key aspects under scrutiny include the altitude of the military helicopter, which was supposed to fly at a maximum of 200 feet in the area, and the staffing levels at the airport’s control tower. The Black Hawk was on a training flight, transitioning between designated helicopter tracks. The NTSB has recovered flight recorders from both aircraft and is examining air traffic control communications, staffing, and training. The crash has led to the temporary closure of two runways at Reagan National, causing over 100 flight cancellations. The investigation aims to understand the sequence of events leading to this catastrophic event.
