200+ Teams, 237 Puzzles: Inside the 2024 MIT Mystery Hunt

The 2024 MIT Mystery Hunt, which began on January 12, saw over 200 teams, including Setec Astronomy with 60 members, tackling 237 puzzles over three days. Teams like Setec, with participants from as far as Australia, worked on complex puzzles, often remotely. The event, a tradition since 1981, has evolved significantly, incorporating technology for both puzzle creation and solving. This year’s puzzles included unique challenges like organizing a Git repository with 10,000 commits and identifying songs from a cappella renditions. The Hunt concluded after over 60 hours, with team Death and Mayhem solving the final puzzle at 5 a.m. on Monday, January 15. In total, 266 teams solved at least one puzzle, with Setec Astronomy solving 174. The event not only tests puzzle-solving skills but also fosters a sense of community among participants, including 52 faculty members, 278 students, and 950 alumni.
