20 Gigabits per Second: The Speed of Taara’s Laser Internet Revolution

Alphabet’s Taara, spun out from its X moonshot incubator, now operates independently to deliver high-speed Internet to remote areas. The technology uses laser beams to transmit data at an impressive 20 gigabits per second over distances up to 20 km. This approach extends traditional fiber-optic networks with less construction and reduced costs. Taara, based in Sunnyvale, California, employs two dozen staff and is actively hiring. The company has secured funding from Series X Capital, with Alphabet retaining a minority stake. Taara’s services are available in 12 countries, including India and parts of Africa. A notable achievement is a 5 km laser link across the Congo River connecting Brazzaville and Kinshasa. Additionally, Taara supports overloaded mobile networks at events like the Coachella music festival.

Google’s project Taara is doing long range (20 km) free space optical comm. Now they have a chip for steering the beam ( and potentially correcting the scintillation as well since the aperture got many segments? ) The chip looks amazing, and it looks like a phased array, there
