The National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) has secured A$2.9 million ($1.8 million) in federal funding for a five-year project aimed at supporting culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people with dementia. This initiative will trial the World Health Organization’s iSupport program, an online training tool for informal dementia caregivers. The program, available in six languages including English, will be governed by an advisory group comprising carers, policymakers, and service providers. In New South Wales, researchers at the University of New South Wales developed an AI-enabled breath test for early silicosis detection. This rapid test, which takes less than five minutes, uses mass spectrometry and AI to differentiate between affected and unaffected individuals with high accuracy. The team is now expanding their study to larger cohorts. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Wellumio and the Netherlands’ Nicolab are collaborating to integrate AI stroke diagnosis into portable MRI devices. Queensland’s TeleMedC is set to expand its AI-powered eye screening for diseases like diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma into India, supported by the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund.
