13 Oscar Noms for French Film: A Statistical Breakthrough

The French musical crime drama Emilia Pérez has made history by securing 13 Academy Award nominations, setting a new record for the most nominations for a non-English language film. This achievement marks a significant milestone as it also features Karla Sofia Gascón, the first openly transgender person to be nominated in an acting category. If Emilia Pérez wins the international feature film category, it would be the first French film to do so in over three decades. The film has dominated the awards season, gaining momentum since its premiere at Cannes. The international feature film category is predominantly European this year, with entries from Germany, Latvia, and Denmark, alongside Brazil’s I’m Still Here. Meanwhile, the Oscars are set for March 3, and other notable films like Wicked and A Complete Unknown also received multiple nominations.
