In 2024, tech workers are increasingly organizing for better conditions at major companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft. The Tech Workers Coalition (TWC) reports that unionized tech workers are now making headlines daily, a significant shift from earlier, less frequent protests. Although exact numbers are elusive, TWC volunteer Ike McCreery, an ex-Googler, notes a clear momentum in these movements. TWC has expanded its efforts to support both union and non-union organizing across the industry, from gig workers to project managers. This widespread organizing, unthinkable just five years ago, is gaining traction. A November study highlighted a “brain drain” trend, where companies with unpopular policies risk losing top talent, especially in critical fields like AI and cybersecurity, where talent shortages are already severe.
