Jobless Claims Surge by 14,000: What’s Happening in the Labor Market?

The latest figures from the Department of Labor reveal a notable increase in initial jobless claims. For the week ending January 11, claims rose by 14,000, reaching a total of 217,000. This figure exceeded both the consensus estimate of 210,000 and the previously reported 203,000, which was revised from an initial estimate of 201,000. Despite this weekly spike, the four-week moving average, which smooths out weekly volatility, stood at 212,750, indicating a slight decrease.
