A political typology quiz from Pew Research, though four years old, remains highly relevant. It uses a statistical method known as weighted clustering around medoids to categorize individuals into one of nine distinct groups. This technique, implemented with the WeightedCluster package in R, sorts respondents based on their answers to 27 carefully selected questions. These questions were chosen after extensive testing to ensure the model’s accuracy and the meaningfulness of the resulting groups. Previously, Pew used a similar method, k-means clustering, for their typologies. This quiz not only highlights the widening gap between Democrats and Republicans but also illuminates the nuanced differences and similarities within the political spectrum.
