Shocking Stat: By 2028, 1 in 4 Job Candidates Will Be Fake!

The rise of AI-generated profiles is set to dramatically increase the number of fake job candidates. According to research firm Gartner, by 2028, globally, one in four job applicants will be fraudulent. These impostors use AI tools to create fake photo IDs, employment histories, and even answer interview questions. Once hired, they can pose significant risks to companies, including installing malware for ransom or stealing sensitive data. Cybersecurity and cryptocurrency firms have noted a surge in such fraudulent applicants, particularly for remote positions. Over 300 U.S. companies, including major corporations, have inadvertently hired impostors linked to North Korea, resulting in millions of dollars being funneled to support their weapons program. The issue extends beyond North Korea, with criminal groups from Russia, China, Malaysia, and South Korea also involved. Some of these fake employees have even been described as top performers. As deepfake technology improves, the challenge of identifying these fraudulent candidates will only grow.

A new hiring trend: Ghost Jobs — fake roles posted to show false company growth, to attract investors and boost stock prices. You’ll likely never hear back if you apply. Red flags: “Easy Apply” enabled + 100+ applicants.

You’d be surprised how many fraudulent candidates exist. Ask anyone who recruits in IT staffing. I personally know of one major financial services firm that hired one of these guys, prompting them to require onsite interviews for every tech role moving forward.
