25 Clinical Trials Underway: The Future of Brain-Computer Interfaces

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are making significant strides toward practical applications. These devices, which involve electrodes implanted in the brains of paralyzed individuals, allow them to control computer cursors or produce speech through imagined movements. Currently, about 25 clinical trials of BCI implants are in progress. This year, MIT Technology Review readers recognized the potential of BCIs by including them in the annual list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies.
