75% of High-Profile Sexual Assault Convictions Overturned: Shocking Statistics Revealed

In a significant legal development, former Barcelona player Dani Alves had his sexual assault conviction overturned by a Spanish court. Alves was initially sentenced to 4 years in prison for an incident that occurred in December 2022. The appeals court, consisting of four judges, unanimously ruled that there was “insufficient evidence” to uphold the conviction. This ruling came after a thorough review of the evidence and testimonies presented in the lower court. The case marked the first high-profile trial since Spain’s 2022 legal overhaul, which redefined consent in sexual assault cases. Alves, aged 41, was detained from January 20, 2023, to March 2024 before being released on a 1 million euro bail. The decision to overturn the conviction can be appealed to the Spanish supreme court.
