Shocking Stat: U.S. Health Department to Slash 20,000 Jobs!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) plans to cut 10,000 full-time positions. This follows the departure of another 10,000 employees since the start of the current administration. These reductions will reduce the department’s workforce by about a quarter, leaving it with 62,000 employees. HHS, a $1.7 trillion agency, oversees critical areas such as vaccines, scientific research, and public health infrastructure. The job cuts will impact divisions responsible for insurance for low-income Americans, drug approvals, and disease outbreak responses. The department will also close five of its ten regional offices. HHS aims to save approximately $1.8 billion annually through these cuts. The federal government’s total spending in fiscal 2024 was around $6.8 trillion. As part of a major restructuring, HHS will consolidate its 28 divisions into 15, centralizing functions like human resources and policy. A new subdivision, the Administration for a Healthy America, will focus on addiction, mental health, and other health issues. The Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response will be moved under the CDC.
