4,000 Feet of Ice at Risk: The Race to Save the Doomsday Glacier

Scientists are racing to understand the stability of the Thwaites glacier, a massive ice structure in West Antarctica that stands nearly 4,000 feet above its bedrock. This glacier, larger than Florida, is crucial because its potential collapse could trigger a catastrophic disintegration of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. A warm ocean current is currently undermining the glacier’s stability, accelerating its movement into the sea. To address these concerns, researchers from MIT and Dartmouth College established the Arte Glacier Initiative last year. This nonprofit will launch its website and call for research proposals today, coinciding with the UN’s first World Day for Glaciers.

We are pushing the envelope a bit on this run. We helped 4 people out of the slush this morning. Up into elevation the temp dropped and we ran Ice trails for 7 hours. #thismightbethend

If you encounter unforecasted icing, here are three actions you can take: 1. Safely turn 180° to exit icing, avoiding steep banks 2. Request a climb or descent to escape icing conditions 3. If denied and icing persists, declare an emergency for priority handling

We played it on the safe side and walked out, but we had folks driving their vehicles out on the ice. I never drive my vehicle on the ice except for my snowmobile or my ATV, It’s not worth it.
