1 Ton of Green Steel Produced: A Milestone in Eco-Friendly Manufacturing

In a significant advancement for sustainable manufacturing, a startup has successfully produced over a ton of steel using a revolutionary method that emits oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. This process, known as molten oxide electrolysis (MOE), uses electricity to transform iron ore into steel at temperatures around 1,600°C (2,900°F). The global steel industry, which annually produces about 2 billion metric tons of steel and emits over 3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide, could see a major reduction in its environmental impact if this technology is scaled up. The startup’s latest test involved running an industrial reactor for several weeks, culminating in the extraction of approximately a ton of steel on February 17. The company plans to further expand its operations, with a demonstration plant expected to start operations in 2027, aiming to produce a ton of steel per day. This development marks a crucial step towards commercializing green steel production.
