8% of Global Emissions: The Future of Steel Production with Lasers

At the 2025 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit, Limelight Steel showcased a groundbreaking method to produce steel using lasers. This innovation could significantly reduce the 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions attributed to traditional steel production. Limelight’s technique involves heating iron ore to over 1,600°C with lasers, allowing for the separation of molten iron from impurities. Their demonstration system uses 16 laser arrays with a total power of 1.5 kilowatts, capable of processing 10 to 20 grams of ore. The company plans to scale up to a 150-kilowatt system, aiming to produce 100 tons of steel annually.

China is out competing ASML. The laser-induced discharge plasma (LDP) EUV generation commercialization push is a DeepSeek moment for lithography that I was fearful of. LDP is much more efficient than laser produced plasma (LPP) which ASML uses. LDP vaporizes a small quantity
