The NFL is considering changes to its regular season overtime rules due to a 56.8% win rate for teams receiving the ball first from 2017 to 2024. This is up from 55.4% from 2001 to 2011. The league executive, Troy Vincent, stated that the competition committee agrees the rules need addressing. Current rules allow both teams a chance to possess the ball unless a touchdown is scored on the first drive. Playoff rules differ, ensuring both teams get a possession even if a touchdown is scored initially. A potential solution is to align regular season rules with playoff rules or extend overtime to 15 minutes. Additionally, the NFL plans to implement a virtual measuring system for first downs in 2025, which will notify officials instantly if a first down is gained. The chain crew will remain as backup. The competition committee is also reviewing expanding replay assist to include more fouls, but there’s no interest in using video replay to throw flags.
