The US Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), established in the early 1970s, produced 750 reports over its 23-year lifespan. It evaluated technologies ranging from electronic surveillance to genetic engineering. The OTA was known for debunking myths and exposing the realities behind hyped technologies. Despite its defunding in 1995, there have been ongoing calls for its revival, especially with the rise of AI, robotics, and big data. Meanwhile, global electricity demand is expected to increase significantly, with an annual addition equivalent to Japan’s entire consumption by 2027. Israel’s use of AI in warfare has surged, particularly after October 7, 2023, with technologies from OpenAI and Microsoft. Additionally, Google faces internal challenges with its AI projects due to lack of coordination.
