The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has requested a four-week extension from a federal appeals court to respond to Coinbase’s appeal. This appeal challenges a ruling by District Judge Katherine Polk Failla, who found that the SEC had a plausible case against Coinbase for selling unregistered securities. The SEC’s request comes as its new crypto task force, led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, might influence the case’s resolution. The task force’s work could potentially resolve both the district court proceedings and any appellate review, saving judicial resources. This is the second time the SEC has sought an extension in a crypto-related case; earlier, it requested a 60-day stay in its case against Binance, which was granted. The SEC’s response deadline to Coinbase’s appeal is currently set for February 14.
