Statistics reveal that China’s shipbuilding capacity is more than 200 times that of the United States. This significant disparity underscores the urgency of reindustrialization efforts in the U.S. Historically, economic strategies have been pivotal in supporting geopolitical objectives. For instance, during World War II, the mobilization of American industry played a crucial role in achieving victory. Similarly, the Reagan administration utilized geoeconomic strategies, including trade restrictions on strategic technology and a military buildup, to pressure the Soviet Union during the Cold War. These historical examples highlight the integration of economics and foreign policy. Today, the focus on reindustrialization aims to bolster national security by enhancing domestic manufacturing and production capabilities. This approach is seen as essential for maintaining and advancing America’s strategic interests on the global stage.

That’s an absolutely insane statistic: in 2024 alone a single Chinese firm, the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), built more more commercial ships by tonnage than the entire U.S. shipbuilding industry has built since the end of World War II.

Last year, China built more commercial ships (by tonnage) than the US has built over the last 80 years (since WW2)!

A single shipyard in China can, within a year, out-produce decades worth of ships in the US. That’s a huge problem.
An unclassified slide released by U.S. naval intelligence last year estimated that China’s total shipbuilding capacity was now more than 632 times that of the US.
