The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has canceled a crucial March meeting of its vaccine advisory panel without explanation. This meeting, held annually, is responsible for selecting flu strains for the upcoming fall and winter flu shots. Dr. Paul Offit, a member of the advisory panel, received an email at 4:18 p.m. ET on Wednesday announcing the cancellation of the March 13 meeting. There is no indication if it will be rescheduled. This cancellation comes during a severe flu season, with CDC data showing up to 910,000 hospitalizations since October, marking it as one of the worst in a decade. Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Human Services has not responded to requests for comment. Additionally, a separate meeting of advisors for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was postponed, with no rescheduling date set. The country is also dealing with a record-breaking bird flu outbreak, impacting egg prices and raising concerns about potential human spread.
