300-Megawatt Battery Fire Reignites: A New Challenge for First Responders

A fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant, the world’s largest battery storage project, reignited after initially burning for days and then lying dormant for weeks. This incident highlights the unique challenges posed by lithium-ion battery fires, which burn hotter and can reignite even after appearing extinguished. The fire, which started in mid-January, destroyed a significant portion of a 300-megawatt grid storage array. Despite efforts to control the blaze, some cells retained charge, posing ongoing risks. The process of de-linking batteries to prevent further issues began on February 22 and is expected to take a couple of weeks. The cause of the initial fire remains under investigation, but it underscores the complexities of battery safety and the need for improved fire suppression and prevention measures. Battery fires can start from manufacturing defects, waterlogging, or punctures, and even during normal use if defects go unnoticed.
