Rootstock, a key Bitcoin layer-2 project, now boasts security from 81% of Bitcoin’s total hashrate. This significant increase from 56% occurred after the onboarding of Foundry and Spiderpool, the world’s largest and sixth-largest mining pools, in February. According to Messari’s “State of Rootstock” report, this development enhances the safety and affordability of Bitcoin DeFi (BTCFi). Transaction fees on Rootstock are 95% cheaper than the average Bitcoin transaction and 55% cheaper than those on Ethereum. Rootstock utilizes “BitVMX,” a modified version of the BitVM programming language, to enable smart contracts and expand DeFi capabilities on Bitcoin. The project has also integrated with LayerZero, allowing Rootstock-native applications to connect with numerous other blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana. Messari predicts growing adoption of BTCFi through 2025, supported by Rootstock’s planned 60% reduction in transaction fees and ongoing investments in builder education and incentives.

Bitcoin DeFi is still early, but it’s getting safer and cheaper, per Messari. Rootstock, a key layer-2, now secures 81% of BTC’s total hashrate—up from 56% after Foundry and Spiderpool joined in Feb. Big step forward for BTCFi’s growth and security.
