67% of Americans Believe Public Intoxication Should Be Treated as a Health Issue, Not a Crime

Recent statistics show that 67% of Americans believe public intoxication should be treated as a health issue rather than a criminal offense. This perspective comes into focus with the recent arrest of actor Haley Joel Osment for public intoxication at a California ski resort on April 8. The incident, which became public on Thursday, involved Osment appearing unable to stand and being barred from a ski lift due to wearing his helmet backward and forgetting his snowboard. Police found what they believed to be cocaine on him. During the arrest, Osment’s pants were unbuttoned, and he made controversial statements, including an antisemitic slur. Osment later expressed deep remorse, attributing his behavior to emotional distress following the loss of his home in the Los Angeles wildfires. The Mono County DA has yet to decide on pressing charges. As this situation unfolds, it highlights the ongoing debate on how to address public intoxication, with a significant majority favoring a health-focused approach.

Everyone needs to stop calling drug use a mental health issue. Public intoxication, whether alcohol or drugs, used to be treated as the problem it is. This is a risk to other鈥檚 safety as well as his own. Stop excusing this behavior.
