64% Carboxyhemoglobin: The Lethal Statistic Behind a Tragic Death

The toxicology results in the case of 14-year-old Miller Gardner, who died while vacationing in Costa Rica, revealed a carboxyhemoglobin saturation level of 64 percent. This level is well above the lethal threshold of 50 percent, confirming that Miller’s death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The Judicial Investigative Agency (OIJ) of Costa Rica conducted the investigation, which included additional tests like drug screenings that all returned negative. High levels of carbon monoxide, up to 600 parts per million, were detected in the family’s hotel room, where contamination may have originated from a nearby machine room. The OIJ worked with the FBI and local authorities to address the contamination issue. Miller’s death occurred on March 21, and the final autopsy report is expected within two months.
