Baylor College of Medicine secured the 2025 STAT Madness championship for the second year in a row. Their study revealed that astrocytes, star-shaped brain cells, play a crucial role in memory formation and recall alongside neurons. This discovery challenges the century-old belief that only neurons store memories. The research focused on the c-Fos gene, finding that 4% to 5% of astrocytes express this gene, which they termed learning-associated astrocytes (LAAs). Experiments with genetically modified mice showed that activating LAAs could induce an artificial memory response. The study, published in Nature, received 63.6% of the 92,001 votes in the final round of the competition, which featured 64 entries and attracted 374,302 total votes.

Nathaniel Ezekiel doing Nathaniel Ezekiel things!
Runs down everyone with a 45.29 anchor split and the Baylor men close out Big 12s with the 4x400m title.
