46-Year-Old Neuroscientist Rewires Mental Illness Treatment, Wins $11M Grant

Kafui Dzirasa, a 46-year-old neuroscientist, psychiatrist, and engineer, is revolutionizing mental health treatment by reengineering brain electrical patterns. His ambitious goal is to treat conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Despite the challenge, Dzirasa’s work has attracted significant funding and recognition. Before completing his residency, he received a major National Institutes of Health grant. In 2019, he was awarded the Young Investigator Award from the Society for Neuroscience. His research, involving implanting electrodes into mouse brains to study signal patterns, led to a $11 million Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant in 2021 and his election into the National Academy of Medicine. Recently, his innovative approach earned him the NIH Pioneer Award, recognizing his potential to launch new scientific fields. His office at Duke University is adorned with numerous awards and magazine covers, reflecting his rising status in the scientific community.
