3D-Printed Heat Exchanger Boosts Efficiency by Up to 50%!

Researchers have developed a new 3D-printed heat exchanger that significantly improves cooling efficiency. The innovative design achieved a power density of over six megawatts per meter cubed. This represents a 30% to 50% increase in efficiency compared to the traditional shell-tube configuration, using the same pumping power. The device’s performance is on par with brazed plate heat exchangers, another common industry standard. The design incorporates unique features like wavy walls, pyramid-shaped bumps, and small fins to optimize heat transfer. After running 36,000 simulations, the team used direct metal laser sintering to create the heat exchanger from an aluminum alloy. While promising, the technique’s slow and costly nature limits its immediate application to niche markets like aerospace and high-end automotive industries.
