An Ethereum user narrowly prevented a $340 million liquidation cascade on MakerDAO by adding collateral at the last moment. The price of ETH had dropped to $1,788, triggering a liquidation price of $1,928 for one position. With less than two minutes to spare, the wallet owner deposited 2,000 ETH from Bitfinex and paid back $1.5 million in DAI stablecoin. This wallet had been inactive since November, making the timely intervention surprising. Despite this, the position remains vulnerable, facing liquidation if ETH falls to $1,781 without further collateral. Another wallet, possibly the Ethereum Foundation, deposited 30,098 ETH ($56.08M) to lower its liquidation price to $1,127. DeFi protocols like MakerDAO use spot assets, making large liquidations potentially destabilizing. Currently, there is $1.3 billion in liquidatable assets on Ethereum, with $352 million within 20% of the current price.
