Slovenia’s finance ministry has proposed a 25% tax on capital gains from cryptocurrency, effective from 2026. This tax will apply to profits made when individuals sell crypto for fiat currency or use it to purchase goods and services. However, trading one cryptocurrency for another will not be taxed. Gains made before January 1, 2026, will also remain untaxed. The tax aims to align cryptocurrency profits with other capital investments like stocks and bonds. Individuals will calculate their profit by subtracting the acquisition value from the sale value, adjusted for transaction fees. Losses can be carried forward to offset future gains. Taxpayers must file an annual return by March 31 and pay within 15 days. The government estimates this tax could generate between 2.5 million and 25 million euros annually. Public feedback is being sought on the proposal. In Slovenia, 15% of adults owned cryptocurrencies last year, up from 8% in 2022, according to the European Central Bank’s survey.
