A team at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has developed Dr PAI, an AI-based blood pressure management system. It integrates DeepSeek’s large language model with wearable technology to monitor blood pressure and heart rate variability around the clock. Dr PAI analyzes photoplethysmography signals and other data to provide continuous readings, health assessments, dietary advice, and exercise recommendations. The system can communicate like a real doctor, using long-term records and daily data to offer reliable diagnostics and treatment suggestions. Currently in beta testing, Dr PAI is set for a year-end launch. The system’s open-source, lightweight AI architecture allows it to run on low-computation devices, making it freely accessible in rural and remote areas. This initiative aims to address the rising hypertension cases, a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and stroke, by promoting equitable health service access and reducing healthcare system burdens. DeepSeek’s technology, rivaling OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is increasingly used in Chinese health IT systems, including by ClouDr, Shenzhen University’s South China Hospital, Akso Health Group, and Waterdrop.
