50% of Climate Adaptation Studies Focus on Drought

A comprehensive study reveals that over half of the climate adaptation research papers focus on drought, with 897 out of 1,736 papers addressing this issue. Precipitation variability, affecting over 40% of the studies, is another major driver, particularly in Africa and Central and South America, where it has led to changes in agriculture, food systems, and urban water supply. Extreme precipitation and inland flooding, also impacting over 40% of the papers, drive adaptation efforts in small island nations through infrastructure development and early warning systems. Heat extremes are noted in 28% of the articles, while other hazards like pests, wildfires, and soil erosion are also significant. Regionally, Africa, Asia, and North America focus on poverty and livelihood responses, whereas Europe and North America emphasize urban infrastructure.
