218 Votes Secure Mike Johnson’s Re-Election as House Speaker

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) has been re-elected as House Speaker with 218 votes, the minimum needed to win. His re-election was supported by President-elect Donald Trump. Johnson had to convince two fellow Republicans, Rep. Ralph Norman (R-South Carolina) and Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas), to change their votes in his favor. Despite a narrow margin of control, Johnson lost only one vote to Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), who voted for Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.). Emmer, a known crypto industry supporter, voted for Johnson. The voting process was swift, taking just 2.5 hours. Johnson, while not very vocal on crypto issues, has supported crypto-friendly legislation like the FIT21 Act and an anti-CBDC bill. His re-election, along with Emmer’s continued role, suggests a favorable environment for crypto legislation in 2025.
