In a 2,000-acre preserve in the northern US, three snow-white wolves roam. Colossal Biosciences claims these animals are dire wolves, a species extinct for 13,000 years, brought back through biotechnology. The company used DNA from dire wolf bones and gene editing to introduce 20 genetic changes across 14 genes into gray wolf cells. These modifications aimed to increase size, alter facial features, and achieve a snow-white appearance. The wolves, named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, were born through cloning. However, some scientists argue that these animals are not true dire wolves but modified gray wolves, as dire and gray wolves diverged evolutionarily about 4 million years ago. Colossal also cloned several red wolves, the most endangered wolf species in the world. The project’s broader goal is to develop biotechnology tools for conservation, though it has sparked debate over the definition of species revival.

GROK: Colossal didn’t use actual dire wolf DNA directly in these wolves. Instead, they analyzed ancient DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old ear bone to identify key genetic differences. Using CRISPR, they edited 14 genes in gray wolf cells to express 20 dire
