157 Million Users Can’t Be Wrong: Disney’s Ad-Supported Streaming Soars

Disney’s streaming platforms, Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, have an estimated 157 million global monthly active users watching ad-supported content. This figure includes 112 million domestic users and is an average over the last six months. The company has developed a methodology to estimate these numbers, considering users who watch ad-supported content for more than 10 seconds. Disney aims to provide transparency in its ad-supported audience metrics, especially since there’s no industry standard for measuring global streaming advertising audience size. The company has been pushing for ad-supported tiers, with more than half of new U.S. Disney+ subscribers choosing this option. This shift has slightly reduced the average revenue per user from $7.74 to $7.70 due to the popularity of cheaper, ad-supported plans. Disney’s streaming business, including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, reported an operating income of $321 million for the September period, a significant improvement from a $387 million loss the previous year.
