A recent study has shed light on a concerning phenomenon: nearly one-fifth of Americans believe that political violence can be justified under certain circumstances. This alarming trend has significant implications for the state of democracy and civic discourse.
According to the study, 21% of respondents believed that “it’s sometimes necessary to use force or violence to achieve political change.” Furthermore, 15% of those surveyed agreed that “the ends justify the means” when it comes to achieving political goals. These statistics are particularly troubling given the current political climate, where tensions and polarization have reached unprecedented levels.
The study also found that individuals who hold strong negative views about the opposing political party were more likely to endorse violence as a means of achieving change. Specifically, 27% of respondents with strongly unfavorable views of the opposing party believed that political violence can be justified, compared to just 12% of those with neutral or favorable views.
These findings underscore the importance of promoting civility and respectful dialogue in politics. As the study’s authors note, “the normalization of political violence is a recipe for disaster” that can have devastating consequences for democracy.

The NIJ and RAND show violence is a multi-factorial issue, socioeconomic issues, neighborhood conditions, family stability, and law enforcement interventions all matter. Thing you guys suck ass at. NUMEROUS peer-reviewed reviews (APA, Lancet) find poverty, inequality, school
