UK’s Secret Order: Apple Faces Global Encryption Backdoor Demand

The UK government has issued a secret order demanding Apple create a backdoor for accessing encrypted data worldwide. This order, issued under the Investigatory Powers Act, requires Apple to provide access to all encrypted content uploaded to the cloud by any user globally. This unprecedented move in major democracies aims at blanket access rather than targeting specific accounts. Apple’s Advanced Data Protection, which offers end-to-end encryption for iCloud backups and other data, is at the center of this controversy. Privacy advocates and security experts argue that such backdoors would compromise user security, potentially exploited by hackers and other governments. Apple might consider ceasing encrypted storage services in the UK, but this wouldn’t satisfy the UK’s demand for global access. Apple has the option to appeal, but must comply during the appeal process.
