Only 0.5% of Jet Fuel Was Alternative in 2024 – Here’s What’s Changing

In 2024, the aviation industry consumed about 100 billion gallons of jet fuel, with only 0.5% being alternative sources. However, the landscape is shifting towards sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) made from materials like used cooking oils, crop residue, and industrial waste. These fuels can reduce emissions by up to 50% or nearly eliminate them, depending on the source. The EU and UK have set mandates requiring 2% of airport fuel to be SAFs this year, with the EU aiming for 70% by 2050. Montana Renewables received a $1.44 billion loan from the US Department of Energy to expand production. LanzaJet opened a facility producing 9 million gallons of ethanol-based jet fuel annually. Despite these advancements, SAFs are currently three times more expensive than conventional jet fuel, though increased production could lower costs.
