Netflix’s First One-Shot Series: A 320-Extra Challenge

Netflix’s first one-shot TV series, Adolescence, presented unique challenges for writer Jack Thorne and director Philip Barantini. The series, which follows a 13-year-old boy taken into custody for murder, was filmed with around 320 extras. Each episode required a four-week block for technical practices and rehearsals, with the final week dedicated to filming two takes per day, resulting in 10 takes to choose from. The one-shot style, where the camera continuously follows characters without cutting away, demanded extensive preparation and on-the-spot rewrites. Thorne’s resting heart rate was notably high due to the complexity of writing for this format. The series, produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment among others, explores teenage knife crime with a raw, unblinking approach, allowing for a more complex narrative.
