Cineworld’s Founder Steve Wiener: A Legacy of Growth and Innovation

Steve Wiener, the founder of Cineworld, passed away at 73. He started his career as an usher and spent 44 years in the cinema industry. In 1995, he launched Cineworld with his wife Jenny, aiming to open five to seven multiplexes within five years. By 2013, Cineworld had become the UK’s top cinema chain, boasting 34 multiplexes. Blackstone acquired Cineworld in 2004 for $120 million, with Wiener continuing as CEO. Under his leadership, Cineworld expanded by acquiring UGC’s UK and Ireland operations for $168 million in 2005 and the Picturehouse Cinema chain in 2012. Blackstone floated Cineworld in 2007, making $113 million, and divested completely by 2011, earning another $160 million. Wiener’s innovations and business acumen have left a lasting impact on the cinema industry.
