90% Efficiency Boost: Artificial Leaf Turns CO2 into Hydrocarbons!

Researchers have developed an artificial leaf that converts carbon dioxide into hydrocarbons like ethylene and ethane using sunlight. This device utilizes a specialized catalyst composed of tiny copper nanoflowers to facilitate the conversion process. On the other side, it employs silicon nanowires to process glycerol, producing useful compounds such as glycerate, lactate, and acetate. The artificial leaf’s ability to create hydrocarbons marks a significant step towards sustainable fuel production. However, the current performance of the device is not yet sufficient for practical applications. The research team aims to enhance the device’s durability and efficiency. They are optimistic about the technology’s potential, projecting that it could become viable within the next five to ten years.

Designed and made by New Wind, these trees have plastic leaves which silently turn in the breeze. While larger industrial turbines can only work in winds of over 35 km/h, the leaves capture energy from wind speeds of less than 8 km/h
