A lawsuit filed in New York accuses Mariano Rivera, a 13-time MLB All-Star and five-time World Series champion, and his wife Clara of covering up child sexual abuse. The allegations involve a young girl, known as Jane Doe, who was allegedly abused by an older minor girl during a 2018 summer internship supported by the Riveras’ church, Refuge of Hope in New Rochelle, New York. Despite being informed of the abuse, the Riveras allegedly failed to take sufficient action, instead choosing to isolate and intimidate the victim to avoid public scandal. The abuse reportedly continued at a barbecue at the couple’s former home in Rye, N.Y., where the victim was left unsupervised with the alleged abuser. The lawsuit also implicates Ruben Tavarez Jr., the adult son of an associate pastor at Refuge of Hope, in a separate incident of abuse in August 2021. The Riveras have not yet responded to the lawsuit.
