1 in 3 Canadians Struggling with Weight Loss: Generic Semaglutide Offers Hope

According to recent market projections, the Canadian weight loss market is expected to reach $4.03 billion by 2035, up from $1.18 billion in 2024. This surge is largely attributed to the increasing demand for effective and affordable weight loss solutions. One such solution is generic semaglutide, a medication that has been shown to have the same efficacy and safety profile as Ozempic and Wegovy.

Novo Nordisk’s failure to pay maintenance fees since 2018 has resulted in the loss of patent protection on these medications in Canada. This development has paved the way for companies like Hims & Hers Health to offer generic semaglutide drugs by 2026. The CEO, Andrew Dudum, sees this as an opportunity to provide affordable weight loss care to millions of Canadians struggling with their weight.

The statistics speak for themselves: one-third of Canadians are overweight or obese, and the prevalence is expected to continue rising unless effective interventions are implemented. With generic semaglutide offering a potential solution, it’s clear that the market is ripe for disruption. As the demand for weight loss solutions continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how the industry responds to this new development.

It’s truly amazing just how low the gray market prices for GLP-1RA drugs are. It’s trivial to get semaglutide for under $20 per month, or to get the far more effective GLP-1RA, retatrutide, for $40 per month. I’ve linked a guide to doing that in the post below.
