In developing countries, the bias in favor of boys is decreasing, with 70% of these nations showing a reduced preference. Conversely, a trend towards preferring girls is emerging in the rich world. These statistics highlight a significant shift in global parental preferences. In Vietnam, To Lam, the general secretary of the Communist Party, offered to eliminate all tariffs on American goods following a phone call with Donald Trump on April 2nd. Trump praised Lam on social media. However, Trump’s tone shifted when Lam welcomed Xi Jinping to Hanoi for his second state visit in three years. Trump then accused the leaders of plotting against the U.S. Meanwhile, El Salvador’s young president is noted for his MAGA-friendly stance and ruthlessness. Vietnam’s economy is booming, yet its new leader expresses concerns about the sustainability of export-led growth.
