90% of Pregnant Women Could Benefit: New Coverage for Fetal RhD NIPT

Natera, a leading genetic testing company, has secured a significant policy change from one of the largest health insurers in the U.S. Starting January 2025, this insurer will cover Natera’s Fetal RhD noninvasive prenatal test (NIPT). This test, which uses cell-free DNA (cfDNA) to determine the RhD blood type of the fetus, is crucial for managing pregnancies where the mother is RhD negative and the fetus might be RhD positive. This coverage could potentially benefit up to 90% of pregnant women in the U.S., reducing the need for invasive procedures like amniocentesis. The policy aims to prevent complications like hemolytic disease of the newborn by allowing for timely administration of Rh immunoglobulin. This move marks a significant advancement in prenatal care, making it more accessible and less invasive for millions of expectant mothers.
